About this property

Hosted by Dark Sky Retreat

Total peace and quiet in this luxury off grid log cabin. Relax in a wood fired hot tub, toast marshmallows at the fire pit or get cosy around the log burner with a good book. You will be surrounded by nature just metres from the edge of the forest, with stunning views of the Galloway Hills and zero light pollution to interrupt the fabulous stargazing opportunities.

Completed in 2023, our off-grid log cabin is the perfect spot to enjoy total rest and tranquility, contemplating the constantly changing sky & views of the Galloway Hills from the covered deck or the wood fired hot tub right outside the door, or venturing straight into the forest. Surrounded by nature, owls, buzzards and red kites fly above, deer can be spotted in the forest, badgers by night & even the odd otter on the riverbank. You are welcome to explore our site – there are streams, ponds, trees, gardens, chickens, peacocks 4 entertaining goats & 3 friendly pet sheep. By night you can enjoy the incredible star gazing afforded by being in the Galloway Forest, Britain’s first Dark Sky Park - there is absolutely no light pollution.

The cabin is constructed from locally grown Galloway Forest timber and is light and airy with plenty of windows to enjoy the views, even when the Scottish weather doesn’t play ball.

The cabin is off grid, with solar powered lights and phone charging sockets and a wood burning stove to stay cosy. There is a gas hob for cooking. The cabin has running hot and cold water and a luxurious rainfall shower. The toilet is a flushable chemical loo, similar to a normal toilet, easy to use and with no smells! There is a small solar powered fridge in the cabin (please note this can switch off overnight if solar batteries run low due to usage or poor weather conditions) and we can provide a cool box with ice packs if required.

The space comprises a large living room and dining space, with a reading corner, a comfortable sofa and a wood burning stove for cosy nights around the fire - included in your stay is a large crate of firewood (usually sufficient for 2 days depending on use) and additional firewood is available to purchase on site or you are welcome to bring your own. There is also a dining table in front of the enormous bi-fold doors, perfect for breakfast with a view!

The bedroom has a king sized bed, with premium memory foam mattress, a large wardrobe, bedside tables and a picture window with views straight into the forest. A USB charging point for devices is located alongside the bed.

The kitchen has a sink with running water, an inbuilt 2 ring gas hob and a workspace for food prep. All crockery, utensils, pans and cutlery are provided.

Outside you can enjoy a raised, covered decking area with seating and the fabulous wood fired hot tub. In front of the cabin there is also a BBQ, outdoor seating area and a fire pit. The cabin is situated in a large field in an elevated position with direct views of the hills and mountains of the Southern Uplands - it faces north so perfect for nights when the aurora makes a show! Behind the cabin you can walk straight into the forest and explore (sturdy boots advised!).

Please note that the cabin is situated in a remote spot, there is NO vehicle access to the door. We provide free parking at our house, from where it is a 6 min walk to the cabin along a track through fields (sturdy footwear recommended). If you provide us with an ETA then we are always happy to help transport your luggage/supplies to the cabin door and we can move heavier items up to the cabin for you by quad bike.

We have 11 acres of land for you to explore - fields with views, beautiful riverside spots as the River Cree crosses our land, gardens and wooded areas. We will point all these out to you when you arrive, we are happy for you to roam wherever you like. We are surrounded by forest with no neighbours, so we can also suggest longer walks if you fancy stretching your legs.

The cabin is set in a very private location, you are unlikely to see anybody else during your stay aside from when you are arriving/leaving. However if you need us we are always happy to help/chat/advise and one of us is almost always on site in the main house if needed. Our mobile numbers are provided in the cabin and guests are welcome to message us with any questions.

Perfect, beautiful isolation. We are on the edge of the Galloway Forest, Britain's first Dark Sky Park. We have panoramic views of the moutains of the Southern Uplands, the River Cree runs across our land and we are 10 mins from Glen Trool, mountain bike trails, wild swimming spots & hiking routes, perfectly placed to explore this unspoilt region . Please note there are no amenities within walking distance.

We have plenty of free parking on site (6 min walk from cabin, see above). The area is famed for its cycling trails and we also have bike storage. There is an hourly bus service between Newton Stewart and Girvan which stops outside our gate. Barrhill is an 8 minute drive away and has a mainline station, we are happy to collect guests from Barrhill by prior arrangement. Both Girvan and Newton Stewart have taxi services.

The cabin is off grid and remote - that is part of its beauty - but please ensure you take note of the following before booking:

There is no mains electricity - lights are powered by solar panels and whilst the solar system is powerful, it is always sensible to conserve power by switching off lights not in use, especially during the winter months. Power is unlikely to run out, but in the event of this happening a torch is provided. There is a USB phone charging point and a socket for non-USB chargers. Please note that any other appliances ( e.g. speakers/ hairdryers/straighteners/air fryers will NOT work and will blow the fuse in the cabin).

The cabin is heated with a large wood burning stove. We will provide your first bag of wood and kindling and additional supplies are available to purchase on site (or you are welcome to bring your own). We will build your first fire for you and there is written help in the cabin for when you need to build your own - or you are always welcome to ask for our assistance, it’s what we’re here for :-)

There is a chemical loo - it works very well, is emptied between every stay, all waste is covered and it isn’t smelly, it has an electric flush and in many ways feels very similar to a normal toilet, but it is different from your loo at home .

There is no WiFi. Mobile signal is generally good in the cabin, but we cannot vouch for all operators - this is a remote location.

Parking is a 6 minute walk from the cabin. We are always very happy to transport bags/shopping to the cabin via quad bike - just ask!

You will experience perfect peace and quiet in the cabin, the only sounds are the birdsong in the day and the owls at night, the finish inside is high and we hope you will find it very comfortable, but some things are different, please come with a spirit of adventure!
